Family Dog Among Victims in Tragic Incident That Killed Minnesota Lawmaker and Spouse

In a devastating tragedy that has shaken Minnesota and beyond, the late State Representative Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark Hortman, and their beloved family dog, Gilbert, were all victims of a brutal attack that unfolded in their Stillwater home on Saturday.

A SHOCKING LOSS FOR MINNESOTA AND A GRIEVING COMMUNITY

The horrifying events, described by authorities as a politically motivated attack, have claimed not only two respected public servants — but also an innocent family pet who brought warmth and companionship into their lives.

Family Dog Euthanized After Attack That Killed Minnesota Lawmaker and Her Husband

The heartbreak continues for loved ones of Melissa and Mark Hortman. Emily Hill, a close family friend and wife of State Representative Josiah Hill, shared the painful news that Gilbert, the family’s golden retriever, was also a victim of the tragic violence. Wounded during the attack, Gilbert was later euthanized due to the severity of his injuries.

“It’s just devastating,” Hill said in a statement to PEOPLE. “Melissa adored animals. She dedicated so much time to helping rescue dogs.”

Gilbert’s Story: More Than a Pet

Melissa Hortman’s love for animals was not just personal—it was part of how she gave back. She volunteered with Helping Paws, a nonprofit based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, which trains service dogs for veterans and individuals with disabilities.

The organization released a tribute recognizing Melissa’s contributions beyond her political work. As a Foster Home Trainer, she helped raise two dogs: Minnie, who now serves as a companion to a veteran, and Gilbert, who remained with the family as a treasured companion.

“Melissa’s service extended far beyond the walls of government,” Helping Paws shared. “Gilbert wasn’t just a dog—he was part of her legacy.”

Inside the Tragedy

The violence that took the lives of Melissa and Mark Hortman has shaken the state. Authorities say the suspect, 57-year-old Vance Boelter, posed as a law enforcement officer before targeting several elected officials in a series of coordinated attacks.

Boelter was later apprehended and now faces multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

In addition to the Hortmans, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also attacked in their home just miles away. Both survived. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described the event as a “politically motivated act of domestic terrorism” that left the state in mourning.

“This act of violence has left a permanent mark on our state,” Walz said. “It must not become the norm.”

Remembering a Selfless Leader

Friends and colleagues continue to honor Melissa Hortman not just for her work in politics, but for the integrity and compassion she brought to every role in her life.

“She didn’t seek attention—she led with purpose and care,” said Emily Hill. “Melissa was grounded. She understood what really mattered.”

Melissa is remembered as a devoted mother to her children, Sophia and Colin, and as a public servant deeply invested in making a difference.

“She was at the height of her leadership,” Hill added. “It’s heartbreaking that it ended this way.”

A Legacy of Love and Service

As messages of condolence pour in from across the country, Melissa’s legacy lives on through her work, her family, and the causes she championed. Whether in the legislature or as a volunteer raising service dogs, her impact is deeply felt.

Gilbert’s loss adds another layer to an already unimaginable tragedy—but his story, like Melissa’s, speaks to a life filled with loyalty, care, and quiet heroism.

Their memory now stands as a powerful reminder of the human—and often hidden—cost of public service.
