|An accomplished actor revered for his chameleon-like ability to vanish into his roles, Cillian Murphy has recently etched his name in film archives with an Oscar win that cements his status among the acting elite. Yet, he harbors a palpable disdain for the fame and fanfare that accompany his craft.

In an industry often dazzled by the shimmer of its own spotlight, Cillian Murphy’s triumph at the 2024 Oscars has cemented his place in the industry. He took home the win for his leading role in the film “Oppenheimer,” an ascent to Oscar glory that speaks of his artistry and dedication.

Following his momentous win, Murphy accepted his award with a grace and humility that have become the hallmarks of his career. Amid the applause and the bright lights, he shared a heartfelt kiss with his wife, a gesture that grounded the evening’s grandeur in the personal joy and support that have underpinned his journey. Murphy was also bolstered by the presence of his sons, who were there to support him.

In the wake of this heartfelt Oscar acceptance, it’s essential to remember the remarkable path that brought Murphy to this pinnacle of success. Having been a staple in the industry, his roles in acclaimed films like “Inception,” “Peaky Blinders,” “28 Days Later,” and “Dunkirk” have not only proven his versatile talent but have also contributed significantly to his storied career.

Despite the acclaim and the iconic roles that have defined his career, Murphy’s perspective on the trappings of fame remains refreshingly grounded. And while he immensely enjoys what he does and considers himself lucky to be where he is, he also maintains a unique stance in Hollywood, characterized by a discernible discomfort with the celebrity aspect of acting.

“I’m so happy to be doing what I love. I’m really lucky. But I don’t enjoy the personality side of being an actor. I don’t understand why I should be entertaining and scintillating [in] a talk show. I don’t know why all of a sudden that’s expected of me. Why?” he shared, expressing bewilderment at the expectation for actors to be equally engaging off-screen.

Referring to these expectations as “just an utter nightmare,” he reiterated how embarrassing it was that he made so much as an actor. He discussed the internal conflict he faces over actors’ salaries, admitting, “Actors are overpaid, you know?”

Yet, for Murphy, there’s a clear boundary between his public persona and private life. The joys and sanctities of his personal world—playing his guitars, enjoying his home, or spending time with loved ones—remain distinctly separate from the spectacle of celebrity.

He has built himself a life by the sea in Ireland with his wife of 20 years, Yvonne McGuinness, and their two teenage sons. By any standards, his life is ordinary and filled with the usual normal people stuff like his kids’ exams, chores, errands, dropping off his youngest to a soccer match, and parties.

And even though the abundance of their creative existence surrounds him, with the local art galleries carrying work by his family members and the music on the radio curated by him or his friends, Murphy relishes a much laid-back social life.

This inclination extends to his interactions with the public; he chooses not to accept photos with fans, a decision rooted in his desire for a semblance of normalcy and privacy in his personal life. This boundary-setting is perhaps unsurprising, given that Murphy reveals most of his friends are not in the acting industry.

He also recognizes the ability of fame to ruin experiences “because it fetishizes everything.” “It kind of destroys nuance and human behavior, but that’s part and parcel of it,” he noted.

His yearning for authenticity and tranquility in his personal life naturally extends to his technological preferences. Eschewing the digital saturation that characterizes modern life, Murphy aspires to embrace the simplicity of the analog age. He admires director Christopher Nolan’s lifestyle, where he does not use a smartphone or have an email:
“I aspire to that life. I was just clearing stuff off my phone, but have to keep the apps for music and music discovery.”
His deliberate disengagement from the relentless tide of online connectivity is so thorough that he was once blissfully unaware of what a meme was. A while after he learned what memes were, he joked, “Now I know that there are memes about me not knowing what a meme is.”
Highlighting the extent of his commitment to a life less dominated by the digital world, the actor revealed that he had turned his phone wallpaper and all his applications black in a minimalistic attempt at shutting out the “noise.”
Despite his considerable success, Murphy is surprisingly modest and a self-critic, which saw him admit to a lack of confidence and an aversion to watching his own performances.

Despite his self-criticism, Murphy does not shy away from appreciating those close to him. And even when faced with the tough choice of balancing his work and life, he concedes:
“I have an amazing wife, and I couldn’t do this without her and her understanding. But it is a struggle. I think it is for any dad whose work takes him away, which it generally does, and which consumes him, which my work does.”

When all is said and done, Murphy’s desire is simply to embody decency and kindness. Acknowledging these as seemingly antiquated virtues in today’s fast-paced world, he confesses, “That’s what I’m trying to hang on to. That’s how I was raised.”

Murphy’s commitment to proximity with his loved ones speaks volumes about his priorities and values. In 2005, shortly after his breakout performance in the 2002 thriller “28 Days Later,” where he portrayed a man fleeing from zombies in a plague-stricken London, Murphy revealed how important it was for him to be close to his family.

He stated, “I don’t need to live in Los Angeles. I’d be tremendously far away from my family. I’d never see them. I love living in London.” As his career was rapidly gaining momentum, he was presented with a role in “The Wind That Shakes the Barley.” This opportunity brought him much joy as it allowed him to stay home with his family in Cork, Ireland.
At this time, his wife, McGuinness, was pregnant with their first child. To support her during this period, the couple decided to stay with Murphy’s parents. This arrangement provided a comforting family environment during McGuinness’s pregnancy and allowed Murphy to balance his work commitments with his growing family responsibilities.

Murphy nostalgically remembered this time: “I was living at home with my folks; my wife was pregnant with our son; and we were running around the hills of west Cork shooting up Black and Tans. Fantastic!” By 2015, the couple, now parents to two boys, Malachy and Aran, decided to return to their roots in Ireland.

Murphy elaborated, “We wanted them to be Irish, I suppose.” When Murphy was away for filming, McGuinness would stay with the kids, but she also occasionally contributed ideas to his work.

One such occasion as when Murphy was actively brainstorming movie concepts to propose to director Tim Mielants, a collaboration he was particularly enthusiastic about. McGuinness proposed they adapt “Small Things,” Claire Keegan’s captivating novella set in a quaint Irish town in 1985.

Murphy initially dismissed the idea, assuming the rights to the novella were already claimed. However, upon consulting with his agent, he discovered the rights were still available.
He presented the idea to fellow actor Matt Damon, who was impressed and agreed to produce the movie through his company, which he co-runs with Ben Affleck. This led to the prompt production of the movie “Small Things Like These,” which became a success.

When McGuinness and Murphy first met, he was not yet famous and was embarking on his acting career with his first movie, “Disco Pigs.” McGuinness joined Murphy and his “Disco Pig” crew on tour. Reflecting on that time, he said, “It was so exciting, 20 years ago or whatever it was – we were all just kids, trying to find our way – but such a special, special time.”

It has been over two decades of being together, and while Murphy, who has recently been dubbed the “Internet’s Boyfriend,” is deeply in love with his wife, the public has varied opinions on his choice of spouse. McGuinness, who has chosen to stay largely out of the limelight throughout her husband’s career, has drawn a range of reactions from the public.

Some have been critical, with comments such as “The wife looks like Cillian in a wig,” and “She is odd-looking. I expected his wife to be stunning.” Yet, some appreciate her natural beauty, with one user expressing, “For once a famous actor with a wife who looks normal, no plastic/fillers or tasteless attention seeking glammed up.”
Another user questioned Murphy’s choice, saying, “It’s hard for me to understand why he chose this not very good looking woman when he is so drop dead gorgeous,” but was countered by another who said, “What some people consider ugly, others consider beautiful. Everyone has different tastes.”

One individual noted, “They showed Cillian’s wife at the Golden Globes Awards. She was done up with hair and makeup, and looked pretty. They always show the same photograph of her with no makeup. They are obviously still in love because Cillian hasn’t left her for another woman.”
Others praised Murphy’s loyalty, with one user writing, “His wife is very lucky. Handsome, down-to-earth, humble and loyal,” and another adding, “Yvonne has lovely eyes. Cute lady! May she and Cillian have another two decades of happiness with their boys.”

McGuinness is an accomplished visual artist whose work spans film, performance, sculpture, textiles, sound, and writing. She values her privacy to the extent that even her Instagram profile is private. The couple recently made a rare public appearance on January 7, 2024, at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California.
Her husband was unaware of his new label as the “Internet’s Boyfriend” until an interviewer brought it up, to which he responded, “It’s lovely. It’s very flattering.” Despite the attention, the award-winning actor remains grounded, attributing much of his stability to McGuinness.

He acknowledges the challenge of staying grounded, especially when one is in the public eye, saying, “I wish it was easier for me, but it’s excruciating. Who likes talking about themselves?”

Raising their children and maintaining a secure and solid space amidst the challenges of being an actor has been vital for him. “To have a really secure solid space is important.
